About Paul Poast

Paul Poast is an associate professor in the Department of Political Science and Committee on International Relations at the University of Chicago. He is also a nonresident fellow at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and a foreign affairs columnist for World Politics Review.

Poast studies international politics, primarily international security. He is the author or co-author of four books: The Economics of War, Organizing Democracy (with Johannes Urpelainen), Arguing About Alliances, and Wheat at War (with Rosella Capella Zielinski). He's also published numerous research papers in academic journals, including International Organization, World Politics, Political Analysis, the American Journal of Political Science, and the Journal of Conflict Resolution. The National Science Foundation has funded his research and has received numerous awards and recognitions—notably the Walter Isard Award, the Bruce Russett Award, and the Lepgold Prize.

Poast received a PhD from the University of Michigan, an MSc from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and a BA from Miami University. Before moving to Chicago, Poast was an assistant professor in the department of political science at Rutgers University, and, prior to beginning his PhD, Poast was a lecturer in the department of economics at The Ohio State University.
