Confronting China's Rise to Regional Dominance
A panel of experts from the United States, Japan, and South Korea discuss a coordinated trilateral response to China’s growing power in the Asia-Pacific region.
About This Event
As China’s military and economic power increase, so does the likelihood that its growing interests and ambitions will conflict with other nations—particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. A task force of experts from the United States, Japan, and South Korea discuss how these allies might develop a trilateral approach to regional defense and de-escalation. The panel will explore areas where the trilateral partners need to confront China, where they can more closely cooperate, and how they can better compete with China in the region.
This event marks the launch of the Council’s new report, Cooperating, Competing, Confronting: US-Japan-South Korea Trilateral Cooperation as China Rises.
About the Speakers
Ichiro Fujisaki
Former Ambassador of Japan to the United States
Ichiro Fujisaki is currently president of the Nakasone Peace Institute and chairman for International Strategies of Sophia University. Previously he served as deputy director general for Asian Affairs, political minister at the Embassy of Japan, director general for North American Affairs, deputy foreign minister, and ambassador to the UN and WTO in Geneva.
James B. Steinberg
Former US Deputy Secretary of State
James B. Steinberg is presently university professor of social science, international affairs, and law at Syracuse University, where he was also dean of the Maxwell School until 2016. Steinberg served as Deputy Secretary of State from 2009 to 2011, and as deputy national security advisor to President Clinton from 1996 to 2000.
Han Sung-Joo
Former Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the United States
Han Sung-Joo is chairman of the International Policy Studies Institute of Korea and is a professor emeritus at Korea University, where he was also acting president during 2002 and from 2006 to 2007. He previously served as ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the United States from 2003 to 2005, and as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1993 to 1994.
Marshall M. Bouton Fellow for Asia Studies
Karl Friedhoff was a Korea Foundation-Mansfield Foundation US-Korea Nexus Scholar and a member of the Mansfield Foundation’s Trilateral Working Group prior to joining the Council. Previously, he was a program officer in the Public Opinion Studies Program at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies based in Seoul, South Korea.
Brian Hanson
Former Vice President, Studies
Brian Hanson served as the vice president of studies at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. He managed the Council's research operations and hosted the Council's weekly podcast, Deep Dish on Global Affairs.
