While the US-Iran relationship has been strained for the past 40 years, tensions sharply escalated after a US drone strike killed Iranian Major General Qasem Soleimani earlier this month. Iran's response, targeting two American bases in Iraq with missile strikes resulting in no US casualties, was seen by some as Tehran opening the door to de-escalation.
