Prosperity or Peril – a Debate on the Future of the EU
About This Event
The European Union, operating as a single market economy encompassing 28 European countries with a population of over 512 million, is an economic powerhouse and a torchbearer of liberal, democratic values. In recent years, however, the Brexit vote, rising nationalism, and increasing anti-establishment sentiment have given way to disillusionment. The age of multi-state expansions and bold policy harmonization, meanwhile, appears to have stalled. Is this ambitious postwar experiment in political and economic integration failing, or could the EU's size and openness position it to succeed in a fragmented world? Columbia Law School's Anu Bradford and Brookings' James Kirchick, holding opposing views on the EU's prospects, debate the future of the bloc.
