Susan Stokes is the Tiffany and Margaret Blake distinguished service professor of political science at the University of Chicago and director of the Chicago Center on Democracy. She has written or coauthored six books on democratic theory, distributive politics, political behavior, democratic erosion, and Latin American politics, and is president-elect of the American Political Science Association (APSA). Previously, she chaired APSA’s comparative politics and democracy and autocracy sections, as well as Yale’s political science department, and she is a founding member of Bright Line Watch. Her latest book, The Backsliders: Why Leaders Undermine Their Own Democracies, examines democratic erosion in the US, Europe, and the Global South.
