George Chiampas

Chief Medical and Safety Officer, Bank of America Chicago Marathon

Dr. George Chiampas is a national and global leader in emergency and sports medicine while advancing the field of event and mass event preparedness. An assistant professor at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University and executive director of Northwestern Medicine’s Disaster Management and Preparedness Institute, he has been recognized as a key leader in delivering health, safety and security for all participants and stakeholders. He works at a busy level one trauma center where he additionally mentors medical students and residents in pursuit of their specialty. Dr. Chiampas has served as the chief medical and safety officer of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon since 2007. In that role with the world’s second largest marathon, he has been integral in guiding and leading innovative measures in the welfare of nearly 55k runners annually. He has created and published the use of a unified command approach in marathon medicine, now a standard best practice utilized globally. Finally, implementing key medical and safety best practices across the industry which now have become best practice. 

Since 2014, Dr. Chiampas has held the position of chief medical officer for the United States Soccer Federation, the governing body of the sport in the Untied States. Overseeing all 27 national teams including the Women’s and Men’s Senior National teams, he has traveled to multiple World Cups and Olympics. In his role he has implemented multiple safety measures including the 2015 “heading restrictions” in the youth game, a first such measure in the sport which since has been adopted by several other global federations establishing a model for the game. He serves on FIFA’s medical committee providing expertise on governance and law changes for the global sport. In 2024 he served as the venue medical coordinator of the 2024 COPA America as well as the Venue Medical Director for the 2021and 2024 Olympics overseeing all medical matters in stadiums in Japan and France respectively.

A team physician since 2010 with the NHL Stanley Cup Champions Chicago Blackhawks, he serves in supporting key areas of athlete health, performance and safety. Dr. Chiampas has served with the NFL since 2015 and for the past four years has worked as a team physician with the Chicago Bears. Dr. Chiampas has over forty peer review publications and has presented nationally and internationally.

Dr. Chiampas is a Chicagoan his entire life and the son of Greek immigrants. His father, a Chanter and Greek School teacher, established an innate cultural and valued foundation. His parents served their community in countless ways including hosting the Greek Radio Hour for their Greek community for nearly sixty years. Married to Lori Chiampas, also the daughter of Greek immigrants, they are members, along with their two children, Katia and Athan, of St. Demetrios of Chicago. Finally, Dr. Chiampas holds several community and civic roles including as the chairman of the Hellenic American Leadership Council (HALC), a national organization supporting and driving Greek and Cypriot cultural, educational and geopolitical advocacy.
