About This Event

Nuclear tensions are at the forefront of international diplomacy this month as State Parties gather in New York for the 2026 Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), the landmark 1970 agreement designed to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. The conference, which runs through May 22, comes amid a fragile ceasefire in the US-Iran conflict, where the US objective was aimed at destroying Iran's nuclear capabilities. Iranian officials continue to threaten to withdraw Iran from the NPT, as North Korea did in 2003 before conducting nuclear weapons tests a few years later. Adding to the urgency, the last arms control agreement between the US and Russia expired in February, with no concrete plans for what comes next. Join Laura S. H. Holgate and Christine E. Wormuth in conversation with Ariane Tabatabai as they assess the outcomes of the NPT Review Conference and what the current threat landscape means for the future of nuclear nonproliferation and international security.
