Kjell Engelbrekt

Kjell Engelbrekt brings a wide range of expertise on European security and strategy, international organizations and diplomatic institutions, as well as on democracy and the rule of law in Central and Eastern Europe, to the global security program at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. He is a professor of political science at the Swedish Defense University, guest professor at Stockholm University and Sodertorn University, and lifetime member of the Royal Swedish Academy of War Studies and the Swedish Society for International Affairs.

Engelbrekt's latest book is High-Table Diplomacy: The Reshaping of International Security Institutions (Washington, DC: Georgetown University Press, 2016). Coedited volumes in recent years are: The NATO Intervention in Libya: Lessons Learned from the Campaign (London: Routledge, 2014); Russia and Europe: Building Bridges, Digging Trenches (London: Routledge, 2010); and The European Union and Strategy: An Emerging Actor (London: Routledge, 2008). He has also published in a variety of academic journals, such as Ethnopolitics, European Law Journal, The European Legacy, Global Affairs, Global Governance, Global Policy, and International Politics.

Engelbrekt has been a visiting fellow at the European University Institute, Humboldt-Universität, Columbia University, University of Illinois at Chicago, in addition to the Council, and has held guest lectures at academic institutions in the United States, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore, and Norway. In a non-academic capacity he has served as secretary-general of the Swedish Atlantic Council and as a consultant to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, the Economic Intelligence Unit, and the United Nations Development Program.
