As a result, America and the free world have fallen behind rivals in power and influence. How can the US improve its strategic competence and prevail in complex competitions against adversaries? Drawing on 34 years in the US Army with multiple tours of duty in battlegrounds overseas, and 13 months as national security advisor in the Trump White House, General McMaster discusses the threats facing the nation, the need for Americans to transcend partisan politics, and better educate themselves about the challenges to the free world.

Former National Security Advisor

H.R. McMaster is the Fouad and Michelle Ajami Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, the Susan and Bernard Liautaud Fellow at The Freeman Spogli Institute, and lecturer at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He also serves as chairman of the advisory board of the Center for Military and Political Power at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and the Japan Chair at the Hudson Institute. Before retiring, McMaster was the 26th national security advisor, serving under President Trump from 2017 to 2018.
