Council Welcomes Four New Nonresident Fellows

The Chicago Council on Global Affairs today welcomes Dr. Alexander Cooley, Suzanne Nossel, Dr. Paul Staniland, and Ambassador Julián Ventura as nonresident fellows. Joining the Council’s roster of esteemed experts, each will contribute to the Council’s thought leadership, programming, and research efforts.
“As we approach the 250th anniversary of America’s independence, the Chicago Council on Global Affairs has a critical window for leading the conversation on America’s global role. The Council will draw on its experts to convene research and high-level discussions on the role of US partners and allies in North America, Europe, and Asia in shaping the future international order,” said Council President and CEO Dr. Leslie Vinjamuri. “These four individuals will be tremendous assets in furthering the Council’s mission and developing solutions that can address the most pressing challenges facing the world today.”
Dr. Alexander Cooley joins the Council as Nonresident Senior Fellow for Eurasia Affairs. Cooley's research examines how external actors influence sovereignty, governance, and political development in post-Communist states, with a particular focus on Central Asia and the Caucasus. He currently serves as the Claire Tow professor of political science at Barnard College, Columbia University. Cooley was previously director of the Harriman Institute at Columbia University.
Suzanne Nossel joins the Council as Lester Crown Nonresident Senior Fellow for US Foreign Policy and International Order. Nossel is an expert on issues including human rights, multilateral diplomacy and US foreign policy. She previously served as CEO of PEN America, COO of Human Rights Watch, executive director of Amnesty International USA, and in the Obama and Clinton administrations.
Dr. Paul Staniland joins the Council as Nonresident Senior Fellow for Asia Studies. Staniland’s research focuses on political violence and international security, with a regional emphasis on South and Southeast Asia. He is professor of political science at the University of Chicago, where he sits on the faculty boards of the Center for International Social Science and Center in Delhi.
Ambassador Julián Ventura joins the Council as Nonresident Distinguished Fellow for Latin America and the Global Economy. Ventura has extensive experience in Inter-American issues and the United Nations system. A career diplomat on leave from the Mexican Foreign Service, he has held senior positions at home and abroad, most recently as deputy foreign secretary and G-20 Sherpa. He currently serves as a senior advisor at DGA-Albright Stonebridge Group.
