Mark Rutte
Secretary General of NATO
Mark Rutte became the 14th secretary general of NATO on October 1, 2024. Prior to joining NATO, he served as prime minister of the Netherlands from 2010 to 2024, making him the longest-serving Dutch prime minister to date. During his tenure, he led four coalition governments and guided the Netherlands through major national and international challenges, including the economic crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and Russia’s war against Ukraine. Earlier in his political career, Rutte served as state secretary for social affairs and employment and state secretary for education, culture, and science, as well as a member of the Dutch parliament and leader of the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD).
