Mallory Knodel headshot

Mallory Knodel is a technologist, researcher, and policy expert working at the intersection of technology and human rights. She has spent more than two decades studying how technology shapes power, security, and human rights worldwide. Her work spans internet architecture and governance, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, end-to-end encryption, censorship circumvention, and open and interoperable technologies.

She chairs the Internet Research Task Force’s Human Rights Protocol Considerations research group and has held leadership roles including as a member of the Internet Architecture Board and chair of the Freedom Online Coalition’s advisory body. Previously, Knodel served as chief technologist at the Center for Democracy & Technology in Washington, DC, and head of digital at ARTICLE 19 in London. She has consulted for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Google, and Meta.

Knodel writes the weekly technology and human rights newsletter Internet Exchange and co-authored How the Internet Really Works, a book about internet technology and governance published in six languages.
