About This Event

For decades, the assumption behind American trade policy was that open markets made everyone better off. That consensus has collapsed, giving way to a contentious debate over tariffs, industrial policy, and what economic strength actually requires in this new environment. Is there such a thing as winning a trade war, and if so, what tradeoffs come with it? Is there a more optimistic path forward than the current rhetoric suggests? Join Soumaya Keynes, Brent Neiman, and moderator Kyla Scanlon for a conversation on trade, economic strategy, and where the United States goes from here.

This program is presented by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and the Becker Friedman Institute for Economics at the University of Chicago.

Following the conversation, please join us for a reception.

Copies of Soumaya Keynes’ new book, How to Win a Trade War: An Optimistic Guide to an Anxious Global Economy, co-authored with Chad P. Bown, and Kyla Scanlon’s book, In This Economy? How Money & Markets Really Work, will be available for sale and signing at the program.
