About This Event

As global geopolitics and economics become increasingly intertwined with national and local economic strategies, the Chicago Council on Global Affairs is revitalizing its Global Economy Roundtable Series. The roundtable will be chaired by Brent Neiman, the Edward Eagle Brown Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business and former deputy undersecretary for international finance at the US Treasury. In this inaugural edition of the roundtable, Heath Tarbert, President at Circle and  Former CFTC Chairman, Asst US Treasury Secretary will join to discuss international financial regulatory and macroeconomic topics, including stablecoins and digital assets, cross-border investment, and national security, as multilateral cooperation on financial stability. 

This high-level, invitation-only series will convene local economists, business executives, and industry leaders for candid conversations with leading national and international figures in economic policy and global financial affairs.

Heath Tarbert is president at Circle, a global financial technology firm. He previously served as chief legal officer for Citadel Securities, and was the 14th chairman and chief executive of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), and was vice chairman of (IOSCO). Earlier roles include assistant secretary of the treasury for International Markets, concurrently serving as G-7 / G-20 deputy finance minister, member of the Financial Stability Board (FSB), and US executive director of the World Bank Group.

Brent Neiman headshot
Brent Neiman is the Edward Eagle Brown Professor of Economics at Chicago Booth. From 2022-2025, he served at the US Treasury as Counselor to the Secretary and as the Deputy Undersecretary for International Finance. Previously, Neiman served as staff economist for the White House Council of Economic Advisers and worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and McKinsey & Company.
