Hassen Al-Shawaf is the director of US tax planning and US tax counsel for BMO Financial Group (BMOFG). He advises BMOFG on a wide range of tax matters, including cross-border and related-party transactions, financial products, corporate reorganizations, and acquisitions. Al-Shawaf represents BMOFG before the IRS and in transactions with counterparties. Prior to BMOFG, Hassen practiced tax law at a Chicago-based international law firm and worked at a public accounting firm. He is a member of the tax committees of several industry and trade groups such as the American Bankers Association and the Institute of International Bankers.
Al-Shawaf serves on the alumni board of his alma mater, the University of Illinois Gies College of Business, where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees. As a member of the board, he has played an active role in raising scholarships for current students. More recently, he was elected as the board’s secretary.
Al-Shawaf also holds a juris doctor, magna cum laude, from the University of Illinois College of Law. He is a registered CPA and a licensed attorney.
