Council to Host NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and U.S. Permanent Representative to NATO Ambassador Matthew G. Whitaker for a Conversation on the Future of the Transatlantic Alliance

The Chicago Council on Global Affairs will host NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and U.S. Permanent Representative to NATO Ambassador Matthew G. Whitaker for a special convening on the transatlantic alliance September 22 in Des Moines, Iowa.  

The evening will address what is at stake for NATO, the United States and the world as the alliance adapts to shifting U.S. defense commitments. Rutte will deliver his first policy speech since the 36th NATO Summit in Ankara, Turkey, after which he will join Whitaker for a fireside discussion moderated by Council President and CEO Leslie Vinjamuri on the future of the alliance and why it matters for Americans at home. 

“The strategic choices NATO makes in this moment will shape the transatlantic security environment for years to come,” Vinjamuri said. “The middle of the country deserves a seat at the table in these important discussions, and we are proud to bring these two distinguished leaders to the Midwest.”
