China Scholar Evan Medeiros Joins the Chicago Council on Global Affairs
The Chicago Council on Global Affairs is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Evan Medeiros as Distinguished Nonresident Fellow on China. Medeiros, a respected scholar of China, is currently the Director of Asian Studies and the Penner Family Chair at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service; he is also a senior advisor with The Asia Group, a consultancy. He will join the Council’s roster of esteemed experts and chair a high-level roundtable on China.
“The Midwest has always had a unique perspective on Asia and China," Medeiros said. “I welcome the opportunity to further develop that perspective as part of the Council’s impressive community of thinkers.”
Medeiros is an expert on the international politics of the Asia-Pacific and especially US-China relations and China’s foreign and national security policies. From 2009 to 2015, he served on the Obama administration's National Security Council as director for China, Taiwan and Mongolia and then as special assistant to the president and senior director for Asia. In the latter role, Medeiros was President Obama's top advisor on the Asia-Pacific and responsible for coordinating US policy toward the region across the areas of diplomacy, defense, economy and intelligence. He previously worked on the US-China Strategic Economic Dialogue as a policy advisor to former Secretary of the Treasury Hank Paulson and has held senior positions at the Eurasia Group and the RAND Corporation.
“We are deeply impressed by Evan’s scholarship on China, his measured and thoughtful approach to policy, and his public service—especially his contributions at the highest levels of the US government,” said Council President and CEO Leslie Vinjamuri. “He will play an instrumental role in shaping the Council’s expanding research and thought leadership on this critical area of focus.”
