Why should we care about Russia’s war against Ukraine?

Rotary Magazine, in partnership with the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, presents an evening with Ivo Daalder, president of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, and John Hewko, CEO of Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation. Former radio host and award-winning journalist Steve Edwards will moderate. The event is open to the public.

Our speakers will discuss the current situation in Ukraine, the war's long-term impact on global security and prosperity, the implications of the reported military leaks, strategies for peace, and the role of nongovernmental organizations in humanitarian relief and postwar reconstruction.

About the speakers

  • Ivo H. Daalder

    Ivo H. Daalder, who just returned from an investigative trip to the region, specializes in American foreign policy and European security and national security affairs. He served as U.S. ambassador to NATO from 2009 to 2013 and was a senior fellow in foreign policy studies at the Brookings Institution.

  • John Hewko

    John Hewko served as an advisor to the Ukrainian Parliament and helped draft Ukraine's constitution. From 2004 to 2009, he was vice president for operations and compact development for the Millennium Challenge Corporation and an international partner with the law firm Baker & McKenzie. As Rotary's CEO, John has overseen the fundraising and distribution of more than $15 million in grants to support Ukraine relief.

  • Steve Edwards

    Steve Edwards, managing director of Koya Partners, served as chief content officer and interim CEO at WBEZ Chicago Public Media. From 2012 to 2017, he helped launch and lead the University of Chicago's Institute of Politics,
