When our oldest was an infant my wife and I went to a dinner at her Thai aunt's house. All of the food was laid out buffet style on a table. Both my wife and I had a violent case of food poisoning, which was on picnic as we still had to take care of an infant, but nobody else in my wife's family fell ill.

That's frigging scary.

That's frigging scary. If a group of people gets sick eating a meal such as you describe or even at a restaurant it is likely bacterial food poisoning, meaning the food is the source. Many or most will get sick. If only one or two people get sick then it's most likely viral food poisoning and the source is an item carrying the virus was passed to it by some human carrier handler of food or utensils, etc. When it comes to being sick with an infection not related to an injury or any other kind that I have had, viral food poisoning was the worst thing I ever experienced
