Ignore the attention-grabbing headline that quotes Will saying that young voters think the GOP is the dumb party. Listen from about 1:00 to 2:45 of his textbook description of the current administration's socialist policies.
I agree with George in principle, but he's not looking at the broader picture.
Before the Sixteenth Amendment, all government income was derived through tariffs. So if tariffs (and thus the prices of things) go up, the income tax should go down. That way we have more money in our pockets and can afford those "more expensive" things.
I also agree with Hazlitt in Economics in One Lesson (free PDF book, I highly suggest reading it) that tariffs are bad.
All those being said, look at the bigger picture.
Sure, most goods imported from China to us have little or no tariffs pre-Trump. What about our goods going to China? Big tariffs. Then we have the quality of goods coming in. How many reports have there been about toxic chemicals in toys for children and pets? You can't be naive enough to believe that the Chinese manufacturers "didn't know" that those chemicals were in violation of US law? (In the words of Steve Martin, "I forgot armed robbery is illegal in this state!")
We don't have free trade with China. Goods from from China to the US are delivered on a 6-lane superhighway. Our goods flow to them like cement through a coffee stirrer.
If you listen to Trump, and hear what he is saying, the tariffs are to force China to the negotiating table to open their markets to us, then as Chinese tariffs on US products go away, US tariffs on Chinese goods will likewise evaporate. Everyone is stressed that these tariffs will be FOREVER when they won't be, provided the other side negotiates in good faith and the final agreement is equally beneficial to both sides.
Did you know when Trump took office, there was a 25% tariff on trucks and 2.5% tariff on cars imported to the US from the EU (instituted in 1963 by Johnson). Likewise, there was a 22% tariff on trucks and 10% on cars from the US to the EU. Trump, threatened more tariffs that raised the spectre a trade war if the tariffs weren't stopped. After renegotiating the deals, we now have ZERO tariffs BOTH WAYS. That, my friends, is how a free market works. Also why you haven't heard about it from the MSM, because Trump did a solid.
