Phenomenal essay. Yes, it's Philosophy but my favorite topic tends to get either steamrolled or goes over people's heads without any form of context or background.

Probe hard enough at kindness, concern or pity and the clear-headed psychologist will soon come up against the fundamental bedrocks of character: envy, malice and fear. To be optimistic about the human condition is to appear sentimental, credulous and not a little simple-minded.

Since there's been a few topics on what to eat, here's the best advice:

Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. That's been Pollan's mantra since ever. All of his books (which I highly recommend, btw) have that phrase. He even uttered it during appearance on the Daily Show when Stewart asked him for one sentence advice on food.
